Feminism in media.

Laura Mulvey created the "Male Gaze" theory in 1975. The concept of the gaze is deals with how an audience views the person presented on a magazine. For feminists, it can be thought of in three ways. These are:-
-How a man looks at a woman.
-How women look at themselves.
-How women look at other women.
Laura Mulvey believes that women play a massive part and men play only an active part in any advertisement with the women playing objects. Mulvey distinguishes between two modes of looking for the film spectator: fetishistic and voyeuristic. Fetishistic involves the substitution of a fetish object or turning the featured figure itself into a fetish so that it becomes reassuring rather than dangerous. Women are treated more as objects than people. Women these days are seen as needing to be skinny and have the perfect figure. Most magazine front covers feature a artist who is sexy with the perfect figures who men would love. In 2009, Lily Allen done a photo shoot for Q. It was seen as too provocative and banned. In 201, Lady Gaga's Q magazine shoot was also deemed as too sexy and provocative and was banned in the US. NME seen this and decided they wanted to challenge the attention and shock people. They chose Music Artist Beth Ditto to feature on the front cover and inside their magazine naked. This shocked people and hundreds complained but this was the reaction NME wanted. Beth wanted to prove that big is beautiful. 'Men don't know what it feels like to be a woman and be expected to look a particular way,' the Gossip star tells NME.  'The Beckhams are part of the machine; Paris Hilton is part of the machine.'  She then also went on to do a similar shoot for Love magazine.
